After our field trip, we enjoyed a field day filled with activities based on a game theme. We packed SO much into this day and it turned out to be simply a Fun Day!
Yes, indeed! We did it all on Monday. First, we visited the planetarium in Chapel Hill (Go Heels!). Below you'll find students working on making a safety device for their space machines, a hands-on project following a movie and star observations in the planetarium. Last week, Scientist Joe visited our classroom. He brought along all kinds of bones, brains, and hearts! Students got to see these up close and personal as well as test to see how quick their reflexes really are! It was an awesome in-house field trip! Last week, students identified different kinds of beans and seeds and then created some fun mosaics and art pieces. Enjoy! Updates from Ms. Flowers: April 20th-April 24:
Students will continue working with fractions this week as they compare shapes (Example: If a hexagon is made of 6 triangles, how do you write that as a fraction?). In reading, we’ll be looking at point of view in various texts and poems. We will add more vocabulary words and work with these words (acting them out, creating stories, etc.) throughout the next two weeks. In writing, students decided on a landmark or national park to research. They will be taking notes from research done on our computers. Our goal is for students to “take notes” and not write sentences straight from the web sites. After note-taking, we’ll work on the writing piece. In science, our class will learn how a change in the environment can affect plants. We’ll also do some reviewing for our test on Thursday. Things you need to know: April 27th is our big day. We’ll head to the Planetarium in the morning. Upon our return, we’ll have field day outside for the remainder of the day. If your child typically brings a lunch to school, please try to be sure to pack a lunch that day. We’ll be eating lunch on the bus if we’re running behind from our morning program =) Continue working on those multiplication tables! If your child can memorize facts 1-12, they will definitely start 4th grade way ahead of others. So far, we’ve had two who have conquered all facts…and many who are very close! I will be teaching cursive but I want to be sure all core subjects are taught well before EOG testing. Cursive will start after EOGs. Thank you so much for all the supplies for science. Students created flowers like Georgia O’Keefe, made sand paper art, and tissue paper flowers last week. I’m hoping to add terrariums to our to-make list for this week! Warmly, Amy Flowers [email protected] Updates from Ms. Flowers- April 13-April 17:
This week, students will continue comparing fractions by carefully noting the numerator and denominator. In Reading, we’ll focus on understanding the main idea of a passage and a poem. Students will look for detail sentences and words that support this main idea. We’ll also work on defining unknown words in a passage by understanding context clues. Our class will review vocabulary words (rehearse, tempting, innovative, obstacle, etc.) to reinforce and expand vocabulary usage. In writing, students will be gearing up for our next piece: researching a landmark/event/place and writing an informative report that will be due in the next 2-3 weeks. Finally, in science, we will be dissecting flowers and labeling parts, defining the types of soil and their purposes, and grasping how composting is very beneficial to plants. I’d love to integrate art during science time this week. If possible, send in any of the following items: Sandpaper sheets, colored sand, mason jars with lids, grass seed ( a gallon size ziplock baggie of grass seed would work!), potting soil, sand, pebbles, any color of tissue paper, pipe cleaners Thanks for all you do! Amy Flowers [email protected] For the last two weeks in science, students have been observing the growth of their lima beans. In 3rd grade, students learn the life cycle of plants, types of soil, and how climates affect growth. Check out our latest photos! I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! Students did a fabulous job on their math assessments last week. They are scored and ready to go home. Power School was not cooperating so I wasn't able to input grades. However, I'll send them home as soon as I can.
This week, students will be comparing fractions (example: 2/3 to 2/6). They will notice how numerators may be the same but the denominators determine the size of the slice or piece which is very important in comparing fractions. In literacy, students will look at passages for signal words that indicate if the writing is presented in sequence (words: first, next, after, etc.) or with cause and effect (words: because, if, therefore, so that, etc.). We'll also add more vocabulary words and study affixes to expand our vocabulary. In science, we will break down the parts of the plant, make a plant flip book, observe our seeds, and begin talking about compost and soil. Things that are helpful to know: Spring Picture Day is Wednesday, April 8th. PBIS (awards for positive student behavior) is Thursday at 1:30. Report Cards go home April 10th. Combo: Field Trip to Planetarium (am) and Field Day (pm) on Monday, April 27th. Thank you for helping your student with multiplication facts and reading. I see lots of improvement!!! Amy Flowers [email protected] After reading biographies and doing some extra research, students enjoyed presenting their reports with poster board drawings representing their famous people. Check out their awesome work!
